A Basic Introduction to Tae Kwon Do
What is Tae Kwon-Do?
Tae Kwon-Do is an ancient form of unarmed combat practiced for many centuries in the orient; it derived from Tae Kaon an early martial art introduced to Korean in the 4th Century. It was not until the Independent liberation of Korea in 1945 that Tae Kown Do Tae Kwon-Do became perfected into its present form in Korea and was also translated into English. 'T ae' literally means to jump, kick or destroy with the foot.'Kwon' literally means fist, punch or destroy with the hand, 'Do' means art, way or method.
'Tae Kwon Do' therefore indicates the technique of unarmed combat for self defense, involving the skilled application of punches, kicks, blocks and dodges with the hand, arms and feet to the rapid destruction of the opponent.

The Korean Flag
The Flag represents nationalism and unity amongst the people of one nation. The flag of Korea is known as the
Tae Geuk Gee , and was origonally created by Park, Young Ho with the input of others in the year of 1882.
The Tae Geuk Gee was created to represent the positive lives and indomitable spirit of the Korean Nation. The background of the flag is white and represents peace, justice and humanity.
The circle in the center, red upper half and blue lower half, represents absolute, or the essential unity of all being. The cirsle itself represents infinity and unity, a oneness of all of the people of Korea. The Yang (Red) and the Yin (Blue) divisions within the circle represent duality, or complete oneness. Examples of duality are heaven and hell, fire and water, life and death, good and evil, man and woman, or night and day. The Red of the circle portrays masculinity, bravery, assertiveness, and strength. The Blue of the Circle portrays feminity, the compassion, support and understanding of Korea. The two halves represent the nature of opposite existence within the universe.
The four trigrams also indicate the duality of opposites and balances. In the upper left trigram, three unbroken lines symbolize Heaven; opposite them in the lower right, three broken lines represent Earth.
In the upper right trigram, two broken lines separated by an unbroken line is the symbol of Water; opposite them is Fire, symbolized by two unbroken lines separated by a broken line. Symbolic of the nation is the white background (the land), the circle (people), and the four trigrams (the government). All three make up the essential elements of the nation.
